Stump

...according to the Chinese calendar, 2009 is the Year of The Ox...but for me, it is the Year of the Old Dog...last evening, a ten-year old Sussex spaniel named Stump won Best In Show at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show...Stump made history in two ways, being the oldest dog and the first Sussex spaniel to take the top honors...

...and this after a nearly fatal mystery disease and a four year retirement...the minute i saw him trot out onto the floor i knew he was the winner...there was wisdom and love in every step...the crowd immediately took to him like he was some sort of doggie messiah...i found myself cheering out loud (though sitting by myself) when he won the sporting group and then yelling even louder when he took the top prize...

...i see this as a not-to-thinly-veiled metaphor for all of us Old Dogs out there who, though long in the tooth, can still hang tough with pups half our age...and half the wisdom...

...and here's the only canine related joke i can think of at the moment...

How do you get a dog to stop humping your leg?...........fake an orgasm.

I need a Stump. I think a big old warm cuddly dog would cure this flu. My dog doesn't cuddle... he freaks if you hold him too tight...

I want Stump.

*sob*

Love you two.

Marmite shame on you. We Yanks love our dogs, and the older the better. ALL old worn out used up dogs have soul and wisdom and should be pampered and respected. They have all given unconditional love to their owners, and we love them all. I hope your neighbors dog takes a big dump in your yard. That a boy Stump.

Mkay... I've been fighting a raging fever for 3 days, so I might be misfiring here (cerebrally) but I've got to say Marmy is one of the softest souls ever when it comes to animals (including insects)... she is their safe haven when everyone else has given up on them. So, I think she was making reference to something far less transparent than an "old dog"... and Michael, if you knew her, you would understand that your response was particularly and unfairly harsh.

i see both sides of this issue, having been in the veterinary biz in the past...but our man Stumpy was ON and nowhere near to misery...i hate to think how much joyful life he would have missed if his owners decided four years ago to just put him down...
...you all have heard the old saying about it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog...
...Stumpy apparently had some more to give to this sometimes loveless, wobbly old planet...bless his old canine heart...i hope he lives another ten years...or as long as his teeth an sphincter hold out...
