Grammy's Afghan

...this is more than just an assemblage of multi-colored yarns...it has travelled with me for over twenty five years...always on the foot of my bed when the weather grows cold, even on the road with the band, it has covered more miles than most humans...

...this afghan has connections to both of my grandmothers...when my paternal grandmother died, i went with my father to help pack up two lifetimes of stuff...my grandfather had passed several years before, so it was left to us to close up the house...in Grandma's sewing room was a tailor's and seamstress' treasure trove...boxes and coffee cans loaded with buttons of a thousand different hues, shapes and sizes...a rack with hundreds of spools of thread arrayed in a rainbow from black all the way to white...bolt after bolt of cloth, cotton, courderoy, satin, silk, polyester, and numerous bags stuffed with balls of yarn...

...my maternal grandmother, Grammy, was given all of these balls of yarn and set to crocheting and knitting them into afghans and such...

...there is love and magic in every stitch...

...indeed...

...a bittersweet anecdote about Grammy's afghan...when i was moving my things out after breaking up with my second wife (yes, there were two) i grabbed the afghan from it's spot on the back of the sofa and as i was folding it to put into a box, my wifey says to me, "Awww...you're not gonna take that are you?...it used to keep me warm."...to which i replied, "Yeah...and so did i."

...speechless, she was...

There is Guitar hero being played in my little lounge and high volume by Jacob and 3 of his mates.... there my Tom at the top of the stairs with a lovely new acoustic guitar his girlfriend bought him for crimbo (he has never wanted to play the guitar before) and I can hear the 'learn to play guitar' CD playing over and over and over...... there is loud punk music coming from Sams little attic bedroom as 3 of his band mates are round having a little jam, after an apparently 'well tight' gig last night...... I have been hiding in the kitchen lol..... the noise level in this house is painful.... maybe I will go sit on the beach in the dark on me own in the quiet of the night lol
